My name is Shiela Menoken. Unlike many people that are members of a tribe I actually have a real Native American name. My grandfather was half Native American and half German/Pa Dutch. He told me that his family was originally from North Dakota and that someone named High Bull was his relative. He died 20 years ago. He had pictures of his relatives so I know his was telling the truth. Anyway I have been searching for years to find information on my family. My grandfather is listed as a Mulatto on the census. In the 1903s he wanted to start a business. NJ told him Indians can't own anything in NJ so he said he was Negro. He became a millionaire in 10 years. Is there anyone out there willing to help me?

Be sure to be very discrete on your info that you have. Is this all the info that you can provide? What is NJ? Is that New Jersey? How old was he when he passed...and so on. I am sure staff here can help you. My name is Shiela Menoken. Unlike many people that are members of a tribe I actually have a real Native American name. Seems to me that High Bull is a known name in Dakota history... have you searched any of the sioux census records? Just being listed as Mulatto on a census doesnt mean that they were referring to themselves as mulatto is only means that the census taker was calling them a mixed blood and that was the closet description to what they were. This mayn ot be the case with your ancestor but it was with mine. Thomas Robertson was 1/4 Mdewakanton and described in one probate hearing as having the appearance of a white man. -yet I foudn him listed as Mulatto as well.. go figure. Werent there a group of sioux that had found their way back east and traveled with some sort of preforming group? Mr Denney had givne us that set of census images... and I think they were one native americna genealogy website. Tamara

Tamara[/quote] I've also seen the word Mulatto used for people who had no black (Negro) blood but were mixed Mdewakanton and white. I think 'mulatto' was just the same as 'metis' and was more likely to be used by English-speakers for anyone who was of mixed blood. Of course an individual Metis might have claimed to be of African-American rather than Native American descent if it was the only way he could have his business, I'm not saying it couldn't happen.

Does anybody have any info on the White family from Standing Rock. My families name comes from White Tail, and i was always told that we're related to Sitting Bull through him. I think they were first cousins, but I dont know, if anyone has info on them it would really help.
